The DNA Molecule

As we know DNA comes from characteristics from each of or parent.  But this is not all DNA does.  DNA is an abbreviation for deoxyribonucleic acid.  It is the genetic material in all living things, and it instructs each of our cells on what it needs to do.  The reason I chose the DNA molecule is because it amazes me how much one tiny molecule can carry so much information and have so many tasks to complete.  Well at eye view DNA does indeed look small but one entire strand of DNA could fill up 200 1,000 page New York telephone books.

The discovery of the DNA answered two questions that would not of been possible to answer without the discovery of this molecule.  The first question was, how can the information for specifying an organism be carried in chemical form? The second question was how is it accurately copied? (The Structure and Function of DNA. By: NCBI. 2002.)  This in my opinion was an incredible discovery.  Our DNA also encodes information through a certain sequence.  This is where DNA makes all living things different from each other because we all have different DNA sequences.  Which means we all carry different biological messages.  DNA is also the code for protein synthesis and also contains the characteristics for the control of our functions, behavior and also the development of each organism. ( What is the function of DNA? By: Wiki Answers. 2013)  One last interesting fact I found about DNA was that we have about three billion bases in our genome.  Genome meaning our entire sequence of DNA. ( DNA Fun Facts. By: Dr. Hsien-Hsien Lei. 2013.)

Throughout learning about the DNA molecule, I discovered that our DNA is a sequence of different nucleotides.  I also discovered that DNA has several more jobs that just creating an organism.  I enjoyed learning about the DNA because it is a complex structure with so much to do and I hope to learn more about it when we start learning cell reproduction.
